‘Losing My Religion’, ‘Shiny Happy People’, ‘The One I Love’ gibi unutulmaz şarkıların sahibi R.E.M efsane rock grubu statüsünde olmasının dışında katıldığı yardım kampanyaları ve politik söylemleriyle etkili bir aktivist.

Son olarak 10 yıl aradan sonra 2004 sonunda Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Bright Eyes ve diğer gruplarla birlikte Vote for Change isimli turneye çıkan R.E.M,

2005 yılında Live 8’te Londra konserinde de sahne aldı ve Hyde Park’ta 200 bin kişiyi, dünyada çekilen açlık sorununa duyarlı olmaya çağırdı. Konserde TV canlı yayını sadece İngiltere’den 9 milyona ulaştı.
